HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SAFARI FROM ZANZIBAR

Planning a safari in East Africa can initially seem overwhelming. With a myriad of decisions to make—from the ideal time to visit and the specific national parks to explore, to choosing accommodations and determining how long to spend in each location—it's easy to feel stressed out. However, we’re here to guide you through this exciting journey! By breaking down the essential components of your trip, we can help you craft an unforgettable experience tailored to your interests and preferences.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

When preparing for a safari in Tanzania, it's essential to ensure you have the necessary travel documents. All travelers must possess a current passport, which should have at least six months of validity remaining from the date of entry into Tanzania. Additionally, tourist visas for Tanzania can be obtained in advance through the nearest Tanzanian embassy or purchased upon arrival at the airport or border crossing. Make sure to organize these details ahead of your trip for a smooth experience.

VACCINATIONS

Proper health preparations for the trip are your responsibility. You may be able to get your vaccinations from your own physician, but a travels clinic will be more familiar with the necessary vaccines and can also provide other helpful information. Be sure to also discuss malaria prevention with the travel clinic.

TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE

East Africa Choice Safaris does not provide insurance for travelers. Speak with your travel agent or airline about options for travel insurance to cover personal accident, medical expenses and medical evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation and loss of personal effects.

CLOTHING

When traveling, expect varied weather and plan to layer clothing that can be adjusted throughout the day. Choose mix-and-match separates in neutral colors to avoid attracting tsetse flies; steer clear of black and blue. Opt for modest attire, avoiding sleeveless tops and short bottoms. Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes for rough terrain and sandals for safari. Most days will be sunny, so don’t forget sun protection: a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

MONEY ON SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA.

It is essential to be aware that while our Friends of Africa Family Safaris itineraries include key components such as accommodation, meals, park entry fees, and game drives, there may be additional costs that arise during your trip.

These additional expenses can include items such as alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, snacks, laundry services, and tips for your driver.

In Tanzania, the US Dollar is the accepted currency for tourism, and we recommend budgeting approximately $30 to $50 USD per day to cover incidental expenses and tips. This will help ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable safari experience.

TIPPING IN EAST AFRICA

Tipping is a customary practice in the context of safaris and Kilimanjaro climbs. It is advisable to consider the following guidelines for tipping:

- For your safari driver, a recommended amount is $20 USD per day per group.

- If you have a safari cook while camping, consider tipping between $10 and $15 USD per day.

- For your Kilimanjaro climbing guide, a suggested tip is $20 USD per day.

- Additionally, for Kilimanjaro climbing porters, a tip of $10 to $15 USD per day is appropriate.

You have the option to make all these payments at once, either at the conclusion of your safari or after your Kilimanjaro climb.
