ABOUT THE PARK
Tanzania's elephant kingdom, in the shade of giants
Just two hours south of Arusha, Tarangire feels like a different world from the open Serengeti plains. Ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old — stand like sentinels over rolling acacia woodland and the meandering Tarangire River. In the dry season this river is the only permanent water for hundreds of kilometres, and the wildlife concentrations it draws are nothing short of spectacular.
Tarangire is best known for its elephants — herds of 200, 300, even 500 individuals are routinely seen at peak season. But it's also one of East Africa's premier birding destinations, with more recorded species than any park in northern Tanzania.

WHERE TO GO
Four corners of one extraordinary park
Most visitors stick to the northern Tarangire River area. Going a little further south or west rewards you with wilder, quieter game drives and unusual species.
Tarangire River Area
YEAR ROUND - BIG HERDS
The lifeline of the park. In dry season, thousands of elephants, zebras and wildebeest gather along the river. The most reliable game viewing in any month.
Lemiyon Triangle
BAOBAB COUNTRY
The northern entrance area, dotted with the park's most photogenic baobab trees. Perfect for first-day game drives and golden-hour photography.
Silale Swamp
JUL - OCT PREDATOR ACTIONS
A vast green wetland in the south that holds water year-round. Buffalo, lions and tree-climbing pythons are regularly seen here. Quieter and wilder than the north.
Kitibong Hill & West
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
Far western reaches with rocky outcrops and open plains. Home to fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk and lesser kudu — species you rarely see elsewhere on the northern circuit.

THINGS TO DO
Beyond the standard game drive

Walking Safaris
Get out of the vehicle with armed rangers and read the bush at ground level — tracks, dung, plants and small wonders the game drive misses.

Night Game Drives
Available in select private concessions bordering the park — your best chance at leopard, civet, genet and bushbabies.

Cultural Visits
Spend an afternoon with a Maasai or Barabaig community on the park's outskirts to learn about life alongside wildlife.
WHEN TO VISIT
Two very different parks, depending on the month
Time your visit to the experience you want — dramatic dry-season elephant herds along the river, or a quiet, lush green-season park alive with migratory birds.
Dry Season · Jun – Oct
Peak
The classic Tarangire experience. Massive elephant herds, predators stalking the riverbanks, dust, drama and excellent visibility.
Birding Season · Nov – Apr
Best for birds
Eurasian migrants arrive and resident species enter breeding plumage. Over 550 species recorded — one of the richest birding parks in Africa.
Green Season · Mar – May
Quiet & lush
Long rains bring the landscape to life. Newborn animals, stunning skies, fewer vehicles and lower lodge rates.
Foire aux questions (FAQ) sur les safaris en Tanzanie
Quelle est la meilleure période pour visiter la Tanzanie et faire un safari ?
June to October is the dry season and by far the best time for game viewing — animals concentrate along the Tarangire River in huge numbers. November to May is greener, quieter, and exceptional for birding, especially with migratory species present.
