Yellow Fever in Tanzania: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Updated: Oct 11

You have been dreaming of your Tanzania safari for months. You can already imagine watching the Great Migration in the Serengeti and relaxing on Zanzibar's beaches. But as you approach immigration at the Airport, you are pulled aside. You forgot about Yellow Fever requirements. Suddenly, your dream vacation hangs in the balance.

This scenario is more common than you think. But with the right information and preparation, you can ensure it never happens to you.

Understanding Tanzania's Yellow Fever Landscape

Tanzania is classified by the World Health Organization as a low-risk country for Yellow Fever. No Yellow Fever virus has been isolated here, thanks to the country's proactive health measures and favorable ecological conditions.

However, being bordered by Yellow Fever endemic countries and having the right environmental conditions means Tanzania remains vigilant. The International Health Regulations (IHR) require specific monitoring, making Yellow Fever vaccination mandatory for travelers from certain countries.

Who Exactly Needs the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

You MUST have the Yellow Fever certificate if:

  1. You are arriving from any Yellow Fever endemic country

  2. You have had a flight connection/transit lasting 12 hours or more in an endemic country

  3. You have visited an endemic country within the last 10 days

You DO NOT need the certificate if:

  1. You are traveling directly from non-endemic countries (US, UK, Europe, Australia, etc.)

  2. Your transit in an endemic country is less than 12 hours

  3. You have a medical exemption (with proper documentation)

Critical Timing & Cost Information

  • Vaccination Timing: Must be administered at least 10 days before entering Tanzania

  • Cost: $50 for foreigners / 20,000 TZS for residents and East African Community members

  • Certificate: Keep this with your passport, you will need it at immigration
